Some useful tips & instructions for translation work.

Dear Volunteer, happy to meet you at this page. If you are wishing to translate an article then we would like you to go through these steps before you commence your work.

Before you start translating…

  • Translation is an art. Make it beautiful for the reader.
  • Read the entire source article and understand it before you begin translation.
  • Ensure that you are comfortable with the subject matter, language style and terminology. When in doubt seek the assistance of other team members.
  • Understand that translation is the transfer of meaning from one language to another. It is not the transfer of words from one language to another.

Regarding the source file…

  • Retain the format of the designated source file.
  • If you encounter or foresee any problem with the document or file, bring it to the notice of the team leader immediately.

Once you start the translation…

  • Read the sentences clearly. Translate sentence by sentence.
  • Do not deviate from the source and make inclusions or omissions.
  • Do not delete original text.
  • Keep your translation and original text together. It helps the editorial desk to understand both original and translated content.
  • Keep sentences brief.
  • Make a draft translation first.
  • Use standard English as much as possible and limit usage of jargon.
  • Pay attention to the grammatical structure.
  • Use punctuation where necessary.

Once you have completed the translation…

  • Run spellchecker and correct misspellings and typos.
  • Upon completion, read the document once comparing it with the original work for missing text.
  • Read again without looking at the source to ensure the translation reads well.
  • Make adjustments (for fine tuning) where required to ensure it appeals to the reader.

Once you have achieved the above your translation may be submitted to the team leader.
