During the period of their exile in the forests, Sita once questioned Rama, “My Lord, you have renounced all worldly pleasures including the kingdom. You have even worn this piece of fibre cloth instead of the princely robes. But you still carry the bow and arrow. Why do you still carry it around despite living like an ascetic?”

To this, Lord Rama replies,” Sita, whatever one may renounce, one must never give up on performing one’s own duties or Svadharma. Being a Kshatriya, it is my duty to protect my subjects. It is my SvavihitaVrutti or pursuit proper to oneself. Though I have renounced the kingdom, I cannot escape from my duty of protecting my good subjects. To embody this spirit, I have come to the forest with my bow and arrow in tow.”

Thus, Rama has given the message that whatever be the adversity, one must never turn their face on activities including rites, rituals and prayers appropriate to one’s caste (Varna) and stage in life (Ashrama).
